Lately, the world has seen a tremendous change or shift from traditional bakeries to home bakers. Recent studies show that Google Search on “baking” in the last 15 months has been at an all-time high.
“How to make a cake at home” was one of the top 10 “How To” searches in 2020. On Instagram, #baking has over 32 million posts, and #homebaking has over 4 million. This ongoing trend is driving many more to pick up baking as a passion or profession.
“You are right! The orders coming in at my end are a lot. Most of my customers are with me because of the freshness of ingredients, hygiene, and the customization home bakers can offer as compared to the commercial bakeries,” said Malvika, a Malad-based baker in Mumbai.
And when asked about the future of the home baking business, Malvika said, “the future seems promising, and I better prepare myself for the same. In the past, whatever we made, customers used to like it. There were fewer consumers and fewer home bakers. But now, the consumer is well informed. They come with their specifications. The fact is that the competition has increased, but so is the number of consumers reaching out to us.”
What do you mean by preparing yourself? And to this, Malvika said, “I am a self-taught baker so far. I checked YouTube, Blogs, and Facebook Groups and tried my hands. But as the customer's demands are increasing and their specifications are as well, it is time to go for structured learning from masters in their respective subjects. Alas! I have failed to find a baking course that could teach me the skills of professional baking, cake decorating, and growing my business, just in one place. Popular academies like Lavonne, Whitecaps, Academy of Pastry Arts, IBCA, IICA, etc., are unaffordable, and I just cannot leave home for months to attend their courses. ”
This entire conversation left us wondering - Is this a problem with just Malvika or most home bakers? However, the more we spoke, the more we understood the enormous gap between what home bakers wanted to learn and what institutes/academies were offering.
